PATHWAYS Identifying and increasing sustainable practices along the supply and production chains of European livestock

With the aim of reducing environmental impacts while addressing societal demands for safe, nutritious and affordable meat and dairy products, PATHWAYS is about identifying and increasing sustainable practices along the supply and production chains of the European livestock sector. Within the PATHWAYS project, the macroeconomic impact of livestock innovation at EU and Member State will be assessed using the MAGNET model. The circular economy module in MAGNET will be extended by adding key material flows such as manure, connecting livestock sectors with crop sectors and the use of food loss and waste (from producers, food processing, retail and food service sectors) as new sources of animal feed. In line with the prevailing projections and using the extended MAGNET model, the business-as-usual scenario from the Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 2 (SSP2) will be enriched with new insights on future livestock sector developments (T2.2) as well as insights on farm practices and typical value chains for livestock products (WPs 3-7). Embedding these insights into MAGNET will capture the interaction between the production-specific developments of the livestock sector and the developments in the rest of the economy within a global context. This will enhance the understanding of livestock’s role in relation to economic developments and the circular economy. MAGNET simulation results will be presented using interactive visualisations in dashboards to highlight how indicators are affected by key drivers and the relative contributions of macroeconomic developments (e.g., income/capita and population) as well as interventions or policies. ! **
